On 18th of April 2019 Raimundas Karoblis Lithuanian Minister of Defence has received Ambassador of Hungary Mr Gábor Diczházi. Beyond the actual questions of regional and european security policy, Hungary’s role in leading the BAP (Baltic Air Policing) mission between 30th of April and 30th of September was also discussed. Gábor Diczházi underlined that it is a particularly important task of Hungarian army and air force that demonstrates our commitment to strengthen the eastern wing of NATO. Our mission is highly important also because this is the 50th BAP mission, the 20th anniversary of Hungary’s and 15th anniversary of Lithuania’s membership in NATO.

On 23rd of April 2019 Hungarian harp artist Melinda Felletár gave a concert of great success in the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius. The event was organized on the occasion of the 440th anniversary of the estabilishment of University of Vilnius founded by István Báthory. Opening speech was held by Deputy Head of Mission Erik Csernovitz. Besides the harp concert, Lithuanian and foreign poets’ works from the age of Báthory were presented. More than 400 participants attended the event.

As of 1 of May 2019 Hungary leads the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission (BAP) in order to safeguard the skies over Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The event in Šiauliai was attended by Commanders of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, foreign ambassadors, representatives of the three Baltic states’ Air Forces and representatives of the town of Šiauliai. Vytautas Umbrasas Vice Minister of National Defence of Lithuania and H.E. Gabor Diczhazi, Ambassador of Hungary to Lithuania addressed the ceremony. Ruben C. Garcia Servert Chief NATO Commander of Combined Air Operations handed over the simbolic „key of the Baltic airspace” to Csaba Ugrik Chief Commander of the BAP mission and to Alberto Valero Commander of the auxiliary Spanish Contingent.

On 14th of May 2019 Remigijus Šimašius, Mayor of Vilnius elected for the 2nd time after 2015 for a 4 year long period gave a short resume at the City Hall of Vilnius on the tasks and development plans of the local government for the missions accredited to Vilnius. H.E. Ambassador Mr. Gábor Diczházi and economic attaché Mr. Ágoston Sarlós participated in the event. The dinamically developing Vilnius concentrates on 3 areas’ development in the forthcoming years: increasing the standards of educational institutes and public transport and improving the lifestyles of city commuters and rural workers relocated into the capital for permanent work.

On 9th of May 2019, during the European week (6th of May-10th May) in the frame of European Passport game organized for Lithuanian schoolchildren,–among several other European embassies- children visited the Embassy of Hungary in Vilnius as well.  In the course of the game, schoolchildren could test their knowledge of Hungary and could gain more valuable information about our country and Budapest.

On 11th of May 2019 our embassy participated in the Europe day organized by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the occasion of the event on which – besides the Embassy of Czeczh Republic-, Hungary also represented itself, the Embassy of Hungary contributed to the promotion of Hungary and Budapest with touristic and gastronomic brochures. The highly successful event attracted numerous visitors - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Linas Linkevicius also visited the Hungarian pavilion.

In cooperation with MKB Fintechlab and the Lithuanian fintech associations Fintech Hub LT, the Hungarian Embassy in Vilnius organized a successful Hungarian-Lithuanian Fintech Forum on 23rd of May 2019 and a B2B event in Vilnius. H.E. Gábor Diczházi, Ambassador of Hungary and Ágoston Sarlós economic attaché as well as representatives of about 30 Lithuanian and 4 Hungarian fintech companies took part in the forum. In the first part of the forum, Rūta Merkevičiūtė, the head of the Lithuanian (central) Bank, the Head of the Bank of Lithuania's Financial Services and Market Surveillance Department, and Asta Grigaitytė, the Client Relationship Manager of the Bank of Lithuania provided detailed information about the Lithuanian fintech ecosystem. In the second Hungarian part, the Hungarian fintech regulatory environment was presented by János Pereczes, managing director of MKB Fintechlab, followed by high-standard corporate presentations (Barion, W.UP, Blueopes). At the B2B meetings, 16 Lithuanian companies had 24 straightforward business discussions. We are pleased to note that during the lecture part, important comments and questions were raised by invited fintech companies’ representatives, which signalled an increased Lithuanian interest towards the activities of the Hungarian fintech companies.

In several respects, Europe finds itself at a crossroads. Fundamental decisions have to be made which will determine the fate of the continent. Some of the major challenges Europe is facing today have a bearing on the Christian identity of the continent. This thousand-year old identity could provide inspiration for finding the appropriate answers to these challenges. This puts a particular responsibility on the shoulders of Christian-affiliated media and more generally of journalists who are guided by the teachings of the Church in their everyday work. Bringing together eminent persons dealing with contemporary issues of Christian civilization and the Christian segment of the press for an intensive exchange of views would give an impetus to the reflection process already going on in Europe and form the current political discourse.

With the above considerations in mind, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary decided to provide a platform for an international conference. The three-day public event will take place on 4-6 September 2019 in Budapest. The conference will be structured around broad topics like “Christian journalism”, “Christianity in the 21st century”, “Persecution of Christians” and “Christianity and family”. Under each broad topic different panels would examine specific aspects of the issue at hand in more detail. As keynote speakers and panelists, distinguished and internationally respected personalities with various backgrounds (e.g. religious leaders, scholars, politicians, journalists) and views will be invited from all over the world, in order to encourage interesting, thorough and fruitful discussions, looking at different perspectives and giving food for future thought. Every keynote address and panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the speakers in order to offer ample opportunity for an interactive exchange of views.

Some of the questions that will be up for debate: What does Christianity mean in the 21st century? How should developments in Europe and other parts of the world be interpreted?  What are the biggest dilemmas of our times? How can our respective families and nations best be served? What is Christian journalism? What constitute Christian values? Which Christian values are under biggest threat?

On 26 June in Vilnius the outgoing President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaite has received the Heads of Missions accredited to the Republic of Lithuania. The President thanked them for their dedicated ambassadorial work as well as for the consistent and continuous support extended by their countries to Lithuania’s interests at the international level and to achieving its national objectives within the European Union.

On 30th of July 2019 in the Saint Ladislaus Chapel of the Cathedral of Vilnius, Holy Mass was celebrated in Hungarian language for the Hungarian pilgrims on their tour in Lithuania. The ceremony was led by Father Ádám Füzes, university professor, director of Kanter Károly Institution for Adult Education and István Kuzmányi, director and editor in chief of Magyar Kurír. The Holy Mass was dedicated to Saint Ladislaus, to his blessingful transnational activity, to Hungarians and to the common European christian values. The ceremony ended with the Hungarian National Anthem.

Apropos of the visit of the pilgrims, besides the Saint Ladislaus Chapel, Vilnius, Holy Masses were celebrated in other Lithuanian churches (in the provinces too) as well. Colleagues of the Embassy of Hungary also participated in the event.

 

On 2 August 2019 there was an accreditation ceremony of the newly appointed Hungarian Defense Attaché Col. ltn. Lajos Szalavari in the Ministry of National Defense of Lithuania. Vice-Minister of Lithuanian National Defense Vytautas Umbras thanked Hungary for its support and solidarity in strengthening the security of the Baltic States, and Lithuania in particular. He also underlined the importance of the Hungarian participation in the Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission which is carried out, this time as a leading nation, by Hungary for the second time this year after 2015.

On 27th of August, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade H.E. Mr. Péter Szijjártó visited Siauliai, Lithuanian military base for NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission. From May 2019 to August 2019 Hungary leads the mission: 92 Hungarian soldiers among them 7 pilots and 4 Jas-39 Gripen aircrafts serve at the base. 

Apropos of the visit, Mr Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade met with H.E. Linas Linkevicius Lithuanian Minister for Foreign Affairs as well: they discussed regional security issues, energy security, European Union related questions, Brexit, and the actualities of the Lithuanian-Hungarian bilateral econonomic relations. Hungary returns to Lithuania in the frame of NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission in 2022.

Between 1st of May 2019 and 2nd of September 2019, Hungary led the Baltic Air Policing mission (BAP) responsible for the air defence of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. After the misson, handover-takover ceremony was held at the Siauliai air base in Lithuania. At the event Zsolt Szabó, State Secretary at the Defence Ministry of Hungary and Vytautas Umbrasas Lithuanian Deputy Minister for Defence showed up and held speech. Csaba Ugrik base commander, chief of the closing BAP mission, handed over ceremoniously the key of the airspace to Jacobs Mollenbeck, Belgian commander of the incoming BAP mission.

Az 1956-os forradalomra történő megemlékezéseink során 2019. október 21-én 11 órakor koszorúzást rendezünk Kaunasban, együttműködve a város vezetésével, a Ramybes Emlékparkban felállított magyar-litván emlékkőnél.

2019. október 24-én 11 órakor Vilniusban a Hajnal Kapunál állított emléktáblánál tartunk koszorúzási megemlékezést.

Mindkét városban a forradalom napjaiban szimpátiatüntetésre került sor. A résztvevők az akkori Szovjetunióban nem kis bátorságról tettek tanúbizonyságot, amikor látványosan kiálltak a magyar forradalom és magyar függetlenség mellet. Természetesen nem maradt el a megtorlás sem, többeket bebörtönöztek, fiatal életutak törtek ketté. Megérdemlik, hogy közösen emlékezzünk rájuk. Mindkét rendezvényre meghívást kaptak a még köztünk lévő résztvevők is, reméljük, hogy ők is minél nagy számban meg tudják tisztelni a megemlékezésünket.

Száz esztendeje, 1920. június 4-én írták alá a Párizs melletti Versailles Nagy Trianon-kastélyában az első világháborút lezáró békediktátumot. Magyarország elvesztette területének kétharmadát, lakosságának több mint felét, és több mint 3 millió magyar szorult a határokon túlra. Éppen ma tíz esztendeje, hogy az Országgyűlés döntése értelmében június 4-én az ország a nemzeti összetartozást ünnepli. Egy éve pedig a nemzeti összetartozás évévé vált 2020.

The "Annus Mirabilis - 30 years of Freedom" exhibition will be on display in Klaipeda between 9-28 September, in the Klaipėda’s Ievos Simonaitytės Library. The exhibition commemorates the events of the change of the Hungarian regime between 1988-90. On the opening ceremony speech was given by Ambassador Gábor Diczházi, Arvydas Česiulis, Deputy Mayor of Klaipeda, and Toma Gergelienė, Head of the Book lending Department.

At the opening ceremony, Gábor Diczházi spoke about the period between 1988-90, as a result of which a change of regime could happen in Hungary. He emphasized that the reburial of Imre Nagy on June 16, 1989 was a milestone on his way to Hungarian freedom. However, the reburial of Imre Nagy was not only a symbolic event, but a socio-political event that moved large masses. More than 250,000 people attended it, several regime change politicians spoke, one of perhaps the most important speeches was delivered by Viktor Orbán, the then opposition politician and current prime minister.

The Hungarian professional partner of the event was the House of Terror Museum, which, in addition to the images of the exhibition, provided additional video and images for the implementation of the opening event.
